Obama is in Moscow negotiating a nuclear deal, Ex-Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara died and the NY Times has this to say about the missile crisis:

At the height of the missile crisis, on Oct. 27, 1962, the Joint Chiefs of Staff recommended that Cuba be invaded within 36 hours. As the secret White House taping system installed by Kennedy recorded his words, Mr. McNamara laid out the prospects for war.
“The military plan is basically invasion,” he said. “When we attack Cuba, we are going to have to attack with an all-out attack.”
He continued, “The Soviet Union may, and, I think, probably will, attack the Turkish missiles.” The United States would then have to attack Soviet ships or bases in the Black Sea, he said. The chances of an uncontrolled escalation were high.
“And I would say that it is damn dangerous,” he said. “Now, I’m not sure we can avoid anything like that if we attack Cuba. But I think we should make every effort to avoid it. And one way to avoid it is to defuse the Turkish missiles before we attack Cuba.”
That idea — a secret deal in which Kennedy offered to withdraw his missiles in Turkey if Khrushchev removed his warheads from Cuba — resolved the crisis. “In the end, we lucked out — it was luck that prevented nuclear war,” Mr. McNamara said in “The Fog of War,” 40 years after the fact.

Das Problem ist, dass der Bundesrat keiner Kontrolle untersteht. Man kann ihn während vier Jahren nicht abwählen.

In einem System des Gleichgewichts sind vier Jahre keine lange Zeit.

In vier Jahren kann man Diktaturen errichten.

Nicht in der Schweiz. Ich habe mit einem Freund einmal darüber diskutiert, wie man in der Schweiz einen Staatsstreich durchführen könnte. Indem man den Bundesrat entführt? Das merken die Leute doch erst, wenn sie zwei Monate keinen Bundesrat am Fernsehen mehr gesehen haben! Indem man die Nationalbank übernimmt? Aber wo? In Zürich, in Bern? Indem man die Armeeführung an sich reisst? Dann ist die Hälfte der Soldaten krank oder kommt sonst nicht. Ein Putsch in Bern? Da lachen die Leute in Zürich doch nur!

Wenn Sie auf Ihre Karriere zurückblicken: Worauf sind Sie am meisten stolz?

Dass ich nie meine Interessen über jene des Landes gestellt habe. Ich wollte als Politiker nie populär werden. Das ist mir gut gelungen.

Ein im Januar vor der patagonischen Küste gesunkenes Schiff mit unter anderem 9 Tonnen Gold und Silber an Bord ist anscheinend gefunden worden.
Nach den beiden reichen Japanern an der italienisch-schweizerischen Grenze schon wieder eine abenteuerliche Geschichte, in der es um viel Geld geht.
Die NZZ schreibt darüber:

Am 17. Januar war die «Polar Mist» samt ihrer wertvollen Fracht vor der Küste der patagonischen Provinz Santa Cruz in Seenot geraten. Die Besatzung gab das Schiff auf und wurde von der argentinischen Wasserschutzpolizei gerettet.

Anschliessend wurde das «Geisterschiff» angeblich von einem chilenischen Schlepper auf den Haken genommen. Beim Abschleppen sei es dann plötzlich gesunken. Es gibt Gerüchte, dass die kostbare Fracht zuvor vom Schiff geholt worden sei. Der Untergang sei absichtlich ausgelöst worden, um den Diebstahl zu vertuschen.

Zwischen Italien und der Schweiz wurden am 3. Juni zwei ca. 50-jährige Japaner mit 134 Milliarden Dollar erwischt. Das Geld (in Form von US-Staatsanleihen und sogenannter Kennedy-Bonds) scheint zumindest teilweise echt zu sein. Was hatten die wohl im Sinn?
Wenn da so mit der grossen Kelle angerichtet wird darf man vermuten dass nicht nur Privatpersonen dahinter stehen.

In Visp war es heute laut der NZZ so warm wie noch nie zuvor im Mai: Das Quecksilber erreichte 33.3 Grad!
Auch in der Region Lausanne war es heute heiss. Als ich am Nachmittag zum fünften Mal innerhalb einer Woche am Strand von Dorigny lag (an dem man mit etwas Konzentration sogar halbwegs für die näher rückenden Examen büffeln kann), zeigte die Station Pully ein Maximum von immerhin über 30 Grad. Die Grafik zeigt den Temperaturverlauf gestern und heute.
Vor solch brutaler Sonnenstrahlung sollte man sich natürlich schützen. Dazu folgendes instruktives Video (via meine Schwester):

Andreas Plückthun, professeur de biochimie à l'université de Zürich, est un des pionniers du protein engineering. Son laboratoire est tellement connu qu'il n'a pas besoin de publier des Open Positions. Voilà ce que dit son site web:

A propos du protein engineering, il y a un article intéressant dans Seed qui dit entre autre:

J'adore quand des personnes offrent leur vue personelle sur des choses ou simplement racontent quelques trucs intéressants sur leur vie et donc cet entretien avec Plückthun m'a beaucoup plu.

I was always more interested in making and building things than taking alarm clocks apart to see how they work. I once took a radio apart, but it was still not obvious how it worked! Much like protein crystal structures today.

Dans la New York Times il y a un article sur John Grunsfeld, un astronaute qui a réparé et amélioré le Hubble Space Telescope plusieurs fois.
Un passage qui m'a particulièrement plu:

Google PowerMeter, bis jetzt ein Prototyp, ist etwas, das ich schon lange wollte. Google schafft es wieder mal, als erstes (bekanntes?) Unternehmen ein geniales (genial einfaches?) Produkt herauszubringen.
Einsparungen (auf dem "monthly bill") sind laut Google im Bereich von 5-15% zu erwarten. Das Konjunkturpaket der Obama-Administration soll eine Verteilung solcher "smart meters" an 40 Millionen U.S.-Haushalte ermöglichen.
Wer noch nicht glaubt, dass Wissen Macht ist...

Jusqu'à présent, plus de 300 planètes extrasolaires ont été découvert (exoplanet.eu). "Fomalhaut b" est la première qui à été découverte dans le spectre visible de la lumière (faudrait-il dire "par photo"?).
Le déplacement sur deux images successives suggère, selon les lois de Kepler, une période de 872 annèes.

I've been wanting to write this post for a long time: A short list of free physics or math textbooks.
Some may be useful during our studies, others less, but I think it doesn't do any harm to see what's out there.
The next time you don't understand a particular topic during class, maybe there's a better explanation elsewhere, so here you go (in no particular order):

Algebraic Topology by Allen Hatcher
I would LOVE to study that topic, it looks really beautiful and interesting. Unfortunately, it isn't part of the standard physics curriculum, so it may have to wait. By the way: Two courses given by Professoressa Hess ("Eléments d'homotopie" and "Homologie et cohomologie") are based on this book. Speaks volumes about the quality of the book. Or is it the the other way around?

Motion Mountain by Christoph Schiller
I admit I haven't read through it (it's about 1500 pages) but from what I've seen, it's fascinating and the explanations are often quite good (and original). It won't necessarily cover the things you learn during typical physics courses at EPFL, though.

Mathematical Tools for Physics by James Nearing
This book is responsible for three quarters of the pleasure I got out of the "Analyse" course this year. I don't know if there's a perfect way to teach calculus, but this book is certainly closer than [if you're a physics student at EPFL, put somebody's name in here].

Un peuple indigène a été découvert au Brésil, près de la frontière avec le Pérou. Voir l'article (en allemand, mais il y a des images) dans la "Neue Zürcher Zeitung".
J'ai de la peine à décider si je pense qu'il faudrait les contacter ou non. Est-ce qu'on pourrait vraiment leur apporter quelquechose de mieux?
En tout cas ça m'a rappelé que je me trouve presque au sommet de la pyramide de luxe, richesse et comfort.

Tous les étudiants de physique (et plein d'autres gens) ont reçu ajourd'hui un e-mail de Prof. Mila qui était en fait une invitation à la célebration des 100 ans de la Société Suisse de Physique. Il y avait un lien sur un flyer, mais celui-ci ne fonctionnait malheureusement pas.
J'étais déjà en train d'écrire une réponse contenant le lien (probablement) correcte, et j'ai un peu reflechi à ce problème. De toute manière il me semble qu'il y a deux possibilités:

Personne ne dit jamais rien, et Prof. Mila se rendra peut-être jamais compte de cet erreur. Les gens qui sont vraiment intéréssées pourront de toute façon trouver le flyer sur le site web de la SPS.
Au moins une personne lui répond, et c'est à lui de décider s'il veut encore une fois écrire un e-mail à tout le monde contenant cette fois le lien correcte. S'il ne le fait pas, la situation finale correspond plus ou moins à 1.

Pour finir, je n'ai pas cliqué sur "envoyer". C'était juste un petit "mishap", ça peut arriver. Who cares anyway? Je ne connais pas le "Klickverhalten" des gens (peut-être que de chercher un lien sur un site web dépasse déjà le "attention span" de certains), mais il me semble que ceux qui veulent absolument y aller trouveront leur chemin sans aide.

Lesson learned: Au lieu d'envoyer un deep link comme http://jenesais.pas.com/sicefichier/vatjrs/existerdans5min.pdf, simplement utiliser un lien du genre http://www.cesitemarchetoujours.com. Un des derniers grands théoriciens, créateur du terme "trou noir", il avait entre autre dirigé la thèse de Feynman, qui disait de Wheeler:

Il a été une source d'inspiration pour moi depuis un moment déjà, mais je l'ai vu la première fois aujourd'hui et je suis impressionné encore plus.
Je trouve incroyable comment des gens comme lui (et les autres astronautes, sans exception) peuvent avoir une vision aussi claire de leur futur, poursuivre leurs objectifs en s'investissant complètement tout en restant équilibrés et humbles. Chapeau...
Ceux qui me connaissent savent que j'ai quelques expériences dans le monde du travail dans un domaine intimement lié a ce métier. Et ça ne diminue pas du tout mon respect pour ce que font ces astronautes, au contraire.

Thermal physics is a difficult subject, with many abstact concepts and a fair number of
mathematical tools that may be new to you.
Here are some specific suggestions on how to do well:

1. As for most physics classes, the single most important thing is to do the problem
sets as well and as carefully as you can. You have to grapple with thermal physics yourself.
2. Important note: copying of other people’s homework solutions is strictly not
allowed. It’s perfectly fine to discuss and argue about homework problems with
your friends, but you must write them up yourself. Our TAs are on the lookout for
homeworks that are very similar.
3. You should review your old problem sets from time to time to check that you have
assimilated the material.
4. Remember things. Many physics students are disinclined to remember important
results, thinking that these can always be derived or looked up whenever necessary.
However, if you remember things, it will greatly facilitate both learning new material
and solving problems: the amount of “new” material will seem less, because you will
be more familiar with the old material used in the derivations.
5. Given the difficulty of the subject, it is important to work especially hard to keep up.
In studying my lecture notes or the text, you will generally need to go over the 4
material several times. Reading the text or lecture notes is not enough. You have
to actively carry through the derivations and analyses on your own. Some
students simply try to read the same thing over and over again, and then discover that
they aren’t learning any more by doing so. A better approach is to read through the
material once or twice and then try to derive the results on your own, referring to
the text only if you are stuck. If you don’t understand a particular aspect of the
analysis, note this down and continue. Then, bring your list of questions to class,
discussion section, or office hours.
6. Be an active listener and a participant in lectures. It is essential to make the best
use of your time in lecture. This means really paying attention, taking good notes, and
asking good questions. But don’t just be a note-taker! Questions from students are
usually incredibly helpful to everyone—professor and other students—by helping the
professor to clarify confusing points and to make sure that the most important
information does not get lost in the details. Often, the best students are the ones who
ask questions, since others feel that they do not know enough to ask one. I strongly
encourage you to ask questions even if they are not perfectly formulated!
7. You are encouraged to find other books on thermal physics—there is a vast
number—to find alternative presentations, examples, and problems. Don’t let the
class set the boundary for your learning. There is no boundary!

Thermodynamics is relevant to saving the world!

Phys. 67 (12), December 1999. This issue of American Journal of Physics is devoted
to thermal physics.
10. The 2nd
Law: Energy, Chaos, and Form, by P.W. Atkins. For the lay reader. This is
part of the well-known series of Scientific American books. It is written by a famous
Oxford, who is also an excellent writer.
11. The Physics of Information Technology, by Neil Gershenfeld. Not primarily about
thermodynamics, but has some interesting applications.
12. A Matter of Degrees: What Temperature Reveals about the Past and Future of our
Species, Planet, and Universe, by Gino Segre. An intruiging and well written book
for the popular audience. Fun to read.
13. Cosmology and Particle Physics, by Lars Bergstrom and Ariel Goobar.
14. Understanding the Properties of Matter, Michael de Podesta. This is not strictly
speaking a book on Thermodynamics, but it is full of tables and graphs with real data
and shows how well predictions based on thermodynamics and statistical mechanics
agree with the real world!
15. Statistical Physics and Microscale Thermophysics, Van P. Carey. Full of
mathematical details, this useful book is written from the Stat Mech point of view.
16. Heat and Thermodynamics, M. W. Zemansky. A standard undergraduate text.
17. Statistical Physics-Berkeley Physics Course, Volume 5, F Reif.
18. Statistical Mechanics : A Set of Lectures, by Richard P. Feynman
19. The Feynman Lectures on Physics, by Richard P. Feynman, Robert B. Leighton, and

1. Pour ceux qui ne l'auraient pas vu, je vous rapelle qu'il existe des choses intéressantes sur internet concernant Richard Feynman.

2. Murray Gell-Mann (toujours vivant, d'ailleurs) avait, pendant un moment, son bureau vis-à-vis de celui de Feynman, mais apparement les deux ne s'aimaient pas trop. Cette video (16 minutes) est quand-même presque obligatoire pour des futurs physiciens ou physiciennes. Notez comment il prononce Coulomb (à 7 min 57 s). Gell-Mann est connu pour bien prononcer des mots étranges à sa langue maternelle.

3. En ce qui concerne la thermodynamique, j'ai cherché quelques compléments à notre cours qui pourraient peut-être aider à la compréhension de certains aspects. Mais notez que je n'ai pas lu tous ces textes et le pourcentage de ce qu'il y a d'utile dedans peut être assez petit. Voilà simplement des liens, vous devriez être capable d'y extraire le contenu intéressant. Ordre aléatoire, mais 2. et 4. sont probablement les plus utiles (et plus ou moins à notre niveau), tandis que vous devez absolument jeter un coup d'oeil sur 3 si vous avez le temps.

Un cours donné a Princeton (Physics 301)
Notes de cours d'un professeur à la retraite de l'Université de Victoria, BC
Motion Mountain (The Free Physics Textbook) un livre plutôt "appetizer" au niveau mathématique, mais clarifie bien les concepts et contient des illustrations fantastiques. Le contenu concernant la thermodynamique commence à la page 2 puissance 8.
Quelques chapitres d'un livre (surtout chapitre 2 pour le moment) qui va apparaitre en 2009 (Princeton University Press).

Bon, ça suffit pour le moment.

Vu que tout le monde est convaincu maintenant que LaTeX pourrait être utile et qu'il vaut mieux apprendre à l'utiliser tout de suite...
Pour modifier le thermowiki, il y a evidemment pas besoin d'installer quelquechose. Par contre, si vous voulez créer des documents vous-même, voilà ce qu'il faut (ou plutôt, ce qu'on pourrait) faire:
Pour ceux qui utilisent Windows, je propose d'installer MiKTeX et TeXnicCenter, c'est assez facile à utiliser. Pour les gens qui utilisent Linux l'installation est en général plus simple.

Hier soir j'ai, par simple curiosité, feuilleté un peu dans le livret des cours 07/08 de la section de Physique. Aujourd'hui (par simple curiosité ;-) ) je tombe sur un ancien article de Physics Today avec le titre intéressant "What Future Will We Choose for Physics?".

These conceptual tools, more than anything else, differentiate the physicist from other scientists. The physicist is most cogently identified, not by the subject studied, but by the way in which a subject is studied and by the nature of the information being sought. A concept-based definition also distinguishes physics from other disciplines that are more closely tied to specific subjects. For example, astronomers study pulsars and biologists study living systems; but because there is interesting physics in both pulsars and the organizational principles of living systems, physicists study both.

La formation en physique ne se définit pas vraiment sur la base d'une liste de sujets spécifiques, mais plutôt comme un ensemble d'outils conceptuels qui ont lié ensemble une communauté de scientifiques au cours du temps et à travers des activités de rechereche très diverses.

Ces outils sont:

Une formation avancée dans un unsemble de sujets communs, actuellement la mécanique, l'électricité et le magnétisme, la thermodynamique, la mécanique statistique et la mécanique quantique.
Une approche quantitative et réductionniste de la compréhension des phénomènes physiques.
Une forte tendance à l'abstraction et à la prise en compte des traits communs, universels d'un problème, afind d'obtenir une compréhension qui va au-delà des spécifitées du système étudié.

Ces outils conceptuels, plus que toute autre chose, différencient le physicien d'autres scientifiques. Le physicien se définit bien plus par la manière dont un sujet est étudié et par la nature de ce qu'on y cherche, que par le sujet étudié. Le chimiste étudies la catalyse, par exemple, le biologiste les systèmes vivants, le scientifique des matériaux les composites. Mais parce qu'il y a de la physique intéressante dans ces sujets-là, les physiciens s'y intéressent aussi.

Conclusion?
Bien sûr qu'on pourrait critiquer que le texte du livret des cours correspond presque mot-à-mot à celui de l'article et qu'on aurait donc pu mentionner la source (je doute que l'auteur de l'article ait recopié le texte du livret des cours, juste pour être clair ;-) ).
Par contre, ce qui me plait, apart le fait que c'est une très jolie définition de la physique qui mérite certainement d'être copiée, c'est que celui qui a rédigé le texte dans le livret des cours avait évidemment lu l'article.
Et pourquoi est-ce que ce seraient des bonnes nouvelles?
Faut lire l'article. Une section de physique dont les enseignants (je suppose) lisent des articles sur les problèmes de la physique et des physiciens sur le marché de travail et les défis de l'avenir ne peut pas être complètement "off track".

J'ai décidé de créer un petit blog, surtout parce que j'en avais marre d'écrire du HTML chaque fois que je voulais communiquer des petits trucs à mes camarades de classe...
